In the book, we see after Junior goes to the other school, he sees how the people there are better off. He tries to hide the fact that he is poor, or that he comes from a semi-broken family. We see near the end, that he goes to Denny's knowing he won't have enough money, but still treats his girlfriend, because he doesn't want to look poor, even though he eventually has to borrow money to cover the tab.
