John wants to center a painting which is 8 feet wide, on his living room wall which is 17 feet wide. Where on the wall should John mark the location of the nails if the painting requires nails every 1/4th of it’s length, excluding the one edges, explain in detail your solution process.

Answer:

First nail will be 4.5 + 2 = 6.5 feet from the left corner.

Second nail will be 6.5 + 2 = 8.5 feet.

Third nail will be 8.5 + 2 = 10.5 feet.

Fourth nail will be 10.5 + 2 = 12.5 feet.

Explanation:

The center of the wall is 17 divided by 2, or 8.5 feet wide from either corner. If the painting is centered, the painting must be 4 feet from the center, or 4.5 feet from the left corner of the wall. 8 divided by 4 is 2. So going from left to right, the first nail has to be 2 feet from the left edge of the painting which is 4.5 feet from the left corner of the wall.
