A bird was sitting 6 meters from the base of an oak tree and flew 8 meters to reach the top of the tree. How tall is the tree? If necessary, round to the nearest tenth.

height the bird sat at on the tree = 6 meters.

height the bird flew to get to the top of the tree = 8meters.

Solution:

length of the tree =

using pythagoras theorem

adjacent = 6 hypotenuse = 8

opposite =?

Let opposite = x

Using the pythagoras theorem

opp² + adj² = hyp²

x² + 6² = 8²

x² + 36 = 64

x² = 64 – 36

x² = 28

x =√28

x = 5.3 meters
