Elena earns $6 an hour babysitting for 2 children.a. She charges $8 for 3 children. a) Is her rate proportional to the number of children? b) .If she uses a proportional rate, how much should she charge for 5 children? c).Explain how you arrived at your answer in part b.

a)

2 children

$6/hour / 2 children = $3/hour per child

3 children

$8/hour / 3 children = $2 2/3 /hour per child

Her rate is not proportional to the number of children since it is $3/child for 2 children and $2 2/3 / child for 3 children.

b)

Since for 2 children she charges $3/hour per child, for 5 children multiply the rate by 5.

5 * 3 = 15

The proportional rate for 5 children is $15/hour

c)

I use the hourly rate for 1 child I calculated in part a) and multiplied by 5 to account for the 5 children.
