A WAN comprises of two or more LANs. LANs and WANs can be wired or wireless. To create a Lan, computer devices are connected to a switch and statically assigned IP addresses to communicate with each other.

To connect two Lans together to create a Wan, a router is introduced within them, with its ports as the default gateway for communication between networks. The router ports are statically configured to route unknown IP addresses within a network to external networks. A DHCP server can be configured on each network for dynamic IP addressing.
