a: equation is x +2x = 24 here x is the variable used for age of Bob's sister thrn Bob's age is represented by 2x.

b: x + 2x= 24

3x= 24

x = 24/3

x= 8

So Bob's sister is 8 years old and Bob is 2x = 2× 8 = 16 years old.
