A boy noticed that the volume of water in a kettle reduced after boiling. What the boy noticed is a phenomenon and the boy can make an hypothesis or a guess as regards the reason for the reduction. Indeed, several guesses can be made, however, to determine which of the hypothesis is true/valid in science, an experiment/experiments would have to be carried out.
