A map's scale is useful in helping to figure out distances between two points. Sometimes, it can help us find an exact distance, while other times, it helps us to create a rough estimate. The scale can usually be found in one of the corners of the map, and it shows how far a certain distance is on the map. If we take that distance and overlay it on top of the map, we can figure out how far away two places are from one another.

Using a maps scale most of the time involves some math. Usually you'd take a distance on the map (in inches) and multiply it to whatever that maps scale is, for example 1:500. A maps scale is used to show larger distances on a map in a ratio form to show the real ground distance. Showing 10 miles on a single piece of paper would be rather difficult if there weren't a scale
