Outliers affect the range the most because range is the difference between the highest and lowest data points in the observation. For instance, in the data set; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the range would be 5 - 1 = 4 but in the data set; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 50, the range would be; 50 - 1 = 49.
