Explanation:

the absolute value is the numbers UNIT DISTANCE from the origin (0,0). since you can't have negative distance, the result is always positive. Can be solved by counting distance on a graph Not by the actual numbers on the line (-1,-2,-3, etc) but by counting the "boxes" from a point to the origin. hope this makes sense!
