Why was there violence in Kansas in the 1850s? Settlers clashed with American Indians already living in the territory. Pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups moved to the area to influence the expansion of slavery. Enslaved people rose up against slaveholders in the area.

There was a struggle to have Kansas be represented by republicans (anti-slavery) and Democrats (Pro slavery). People were fighting for political power in the legislature for either pro or anti slavery.
