When they ask, for example "What is the value of √100?" are they asking what is the square root of 100?

Answer:

Yes. The term
\sqrt{} means "square root".

If there is a number beside the symbol, for example
\sqrt[3]{}, this means to cube root. But if there is no number, it just simply means square root.
