Combining Like Terms

Equation: 5x + 7y -2x + 3y

So I get why it could be simplified into 5x - 2x and 7y + 3y, but how do we get the operation to combine those two?
What I mean is what would go in the underline here -
5x - 2x _ 7y + 3y
Explanation please not just answer

it would be a + because the 7 in 7y is positive, therefore it would be added to the X’s. if it was -7y, then the underline would be a –.
