Ms. Lady works-out with Ms. Beetle; her average
crawling time has increased to 4 feet per minute, while
Ms. Beetle, who is used to eating Hot Cheetos and
watching TV, averages 2.5 feet per minute. While at
Senn's Elm Tree-house, the three decide to experiment
with linear equations. The objective is to end up at the
Rose Bush at the same time. Senn still averages 5 feet per
minute. How much of a head start does he need to give
each of his friends in order for their function rules to
intersect at 92 feet (the rose bush). What is the equation
for each bug which makes their experiment successful?

Let first calculate the normal time each of them will reach the 92 feet distance.

For senn

Time = 92/5 = 18.4 minutes

That means in 18.4 minutes the two other friends must reach the point at 92 feet.

Calculate the distance at the time for each of the friends.

For Ms Lady

Time = 92/4 = 23 minutes

Distance = speed × time

Distance = 4 × 18.4 = 73.9

92 - 73.6 = 18.4 feet

For Ms Beetle

Time = 92/2.5 = 36.8 minutes

Distance = 2.5 × 18.4

Distance = 46 feet

92 - 46 = 48 feet

Therefore, Senn must give a head start of 18.4 feet for Ms Lady

And 48 feet for Ms Beetle in order for their function rules to intersect at 92 feet (the rose bush).

Their equation will be

Ms Lady

Y = 4x + 18.4

Ms Beetle

Y = 2.5x + 48

Ms Senn

Y = 5x
