bob believes that giraffes have long necks because they have stretched their necks to try and reach food that high in trees. Sunce parents had stretched its neck, it passed the long neck on to its offspring. Based on what you know about natural selection, what is wrong with bobs argument. Using Darwins natural selection, explain how the giraffe's would have acquired long necks over time.

Darwin's natural selection tells us that, yes the giraffes needed to reach the high trees to survive, but only a portion of the giraffe population originally had long necks, but those that did were able to reach the food and therefore lived long enough to have offspring. The offspring of the giraffes with long necks inherited the genes for long necks and then they live long, and the cycle continues until you get the species we have now.
Note that in every generation there are mutations, that is how all of this generic variety started.

Answer:

They both thought that the traits change because of an environmental change in order to survive. Bob believes that giraffes have long necks because they have stretched their necks to try and reach food that is high in trees. Since the parent had stretched its neck, it passed the long neck on to its offspring.
