Step-by-step explanation:
[Note: *this is a word-for-word excerpt from the Penn Foster reading assignment, ''The Transatlantic Slave Trade and the African Diaspora' READING ASSIGNMENT'']
"When exploration in the Americas began in the late fifteenth century, there was an increasing demand for labor. The European demand for labor in the colonies drove the beginning of the slave trade. Some European nations initially enslaved Native Americans, but they were vulnerable to disease and able to escape much more easily. European indentured servants were also brought to the Americas to work; however, many died, and those who lived earned their freedom within several years. European powers looked elsewhere for large, reliable labor supply to create more profits. The Spanish took the first African captives from Europe to the Americas in 1503. In the early slave trade, most of the captives were from West Africa, between what's now Senegal and Angola." (PF World History L3 PDF, pg 31)
