A rectangular garden is surrounded by a path of uniform width 3m. If breadth of the garden is 40m and area of the path is 588m², find the length of the garden.​

Explanation:

  • Width of the path = 3 m
  • Breadth of the garden = 40 m
  • Length of the garden = x
  • Area of the path = 588 m²

Area of the path is the difference of the of full area and the area of the garden.

Full area will have the sides:

  • 40 + 3*2= 46 and
  • x + 3*2 = x + 6

Area of the garden is

  • 40*x

So the difference is:

  • 588 = (x + 6)*46 - 40*x
  • 588 = 46x + 6*46 - 40x
  • 588 = 6x + 276
  • 6x = 588 - 276
  • 6x = 312
  • x = 312/6
  • x = 52 m

The length of the garden is 52 m
