How are airplanes used in map making?

It allows accurate alignment of roads and placement of "cultural" features without the need for surface surveying, and improvements in photogrammetry have enabled aerial pictures to be used routinely as a basis for depicting terrain relief -- the ups and downs of hills, ridges, etc.
