Manhattan attracted the first Dutch Settlers for the very same reason that it attracted the Lenape before (the native americans who inhabited the area previous to the European arrival), and the English later. Manhattan is an extraordinary natural harbor, at the mouth of the Hudson river, with the possibility of connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Hudson River up to the territory of modern day Canada.
