Answer:

Theme:

- by drawing upon an older person's experiences, you gain ideas, information and skills that can shape your future

-generations can bond and strengthen their love through understanding

-older and younger people can strengthen their relationships through love and understanding

Conflict:

-Man vs. Man - Stacy vs. Grandmother

-Stacy must give up ballet because the family needs money for Grandmother to come to San Francisco from Hong Kong (Hong Kong was given back from British control to the Chinese government of communism)

-Stacy then needed to give up her bedroom with no thanks from Grandmother

-Stacy tries to become friends with grandmother but -Grandmother gets angry when she sees the pink silk ribbons and the callouses on Stacy's feet

-Stacy misunderstands her grandmother as her grandmother misunderstands the pink silk ribbons

Characters:

Ian

younger brother to Stacy who is spoiled by grandmother because "in China boys are everything"

looks like his mother and grandmother

Learns to speak some Chinese

Mother

very obedient toward her mother
