Is (5, 2) a solution to the equation y = 8x?

To satisfy this equation, the y value has to be 8 times the x.

If you multiply 5 by 8, you get 40, not 2, so this is not a solution. The point (5,40) would be.

All we need to do is substitute and check.

5 = x

2 = y

y = 8x

2 = 8(5)

2 does not equal 40
