The act for the government and protection of indian was passed In 1850 by the California legislature. The Act ensured that the land, properties and activities of the Indians were controlled by the government. The Indians were the original inhabitants of the land and this led to dispossession of their land.

This made the Indians to being answerable to the government and they were then reduced to slaves on their own land because they were now under a new government.
