Think of it less as adding a negative to a positive number but more as a positive to a negative number. If I have -5 of something and I had 3 to it I have -2 two because when you would add that it would go
-5, -4, -3, -2
Or
You could think of it as subtracting 5 from 3 and just get rid of the plus sign. You’ll still get the same answer. Now it is:
3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2
