What the farm workers wanted wasn't excessive -- better pay (more than $1/hr), better working conditions (toilets, drinking water) -- yet the grape farmers refused. Why do you think the grape farmers refused such simple requests, and for so long?

History shows that when people are living in extreme poverty and you give them some extra money/hope; they will shortly revolt again and ask for more. So the grape farmers must have known this based on experience.
