1. When the narrator states: "As one of the dumb, voiceless ones I speak," what does she mean by voiceless? O She lost her voice due to laryngitis. She cannot hear herself among the crowds of people. She is ignored and cannot speak up for herself due to language barrier and her status as an immigrant. She does not know when it is appropriate to speak up.

Name of the Context:

The above question contains a para which is extracted from the story, "America and I" which is based on the author's journey in a new country. In each sentence and line, she has used different personifications and Imagery to depict her views and attitude towards America.

  • Author: Anzia Yezierska

If we will see the short story, In the opening lines only She told that, "As one of the dumb, voiceless ones I speak." is stated by her because she was one of the those millions of immigrants who arrived there and she was not able to hear herself in that crowd. The beautiful line which shows this is, One of the millions of immigrants beating, beating out their hearts at your gates for a breath of understanding
