Abraham Lincoln released the Emancipation Proclamation to gain support for the war effort. For one, he was attempting to keep Britain from recognizing the South for their antislavery. He wanted to encourage the Blacks to join the war effort and for the Union. Ultimately, he was trying to gain support for the war effort, but did try to use justifiable reasons for this proclamation. He did not want the slaves to be forced into war effort, he wanted to give them a choice.
