The number of red balls, in the beginning, is 47.

Explanation:

According to the question,

  • Luke gains 2 blue balls, losing 3 red balls every day.
  • He seems to have similar amount of blue as well as red balls forward to 5 days.
  • He does indeed have twice quite so many red balls as blue balls forward to 9 days.

Should let the number of blue balls will be "x" in the beginning and indeed the number of red balls will be "y".

After five days,


x + 10 = y - 15 ...(equation 1)

After nine days,


x + 18 = 2 ( y - 27 ) ...(equation 2)

On applying subtraction between the above two equations, we get


8 = y - 39


y = 47
