Explanation:

Let x be the fourth score

To find the average add up all the scores and divide by 4

We want to score to be 90 or higher

( 83+96+85+x) /4≥ 90

Multiply both sides by 4

( 83+96+85+x) /4 *4≥ 90*4

( 83+96+85+x) ≥ 360

Combine like terms

x+264 ≥360

Subtract 264 from each side

x+264-264 ≥360 -264

x ≥ 96

The student needs a 96 or greater.
