Here’s what you can do to make this very simple. Consider that the “missing” space between the rectangles isn’t there. Then, find the area:

10 x 9 = 90 mm

Now, find the area of the “missing” part.

5 x 2 = 10 mm

Finally, you deduct the missing part from the complete rectangle!

90 - 10 = 80 mm

The area of this whole thing is 80 mm!

Answer:

A_(total) = 80\ mm^2

Explanation:

Step 1: Determine the area of the bottom rectangle

A = l * w

A = (9\ mm) * (10\ mm - 5\ mm)

A = 9\ mm * 5\ mm

A = 45\ mm^2

Step 2: Determine the area of the top rectangle

A = l * w

A = (9\ mm - 2\ mm) * (5\ mm)

A = 7\ mm * 5\ mm

A = 35\ mm^2

Step 3: Determine the total area

A_(total) = 45\ mm^2 + 35\ mm^2

A_(total) = 80\ mm^2

Answer:
A_(total) = 80\ mm^2
