Explanation:

so when 10 - 3x + 2 is subtracted from 8 - 7x + 9

an important thing here is to remember the brackets as you minus something,

17 - 7x - ( 12 - 3x)

which gives 17 - 7x -12 + 3x

which then the difference yields .... 5 - 4x
