Answer:

(x, y) = (3.7, 1.7)

Explanation:

5x + 2y = 22

-2x + 6y = 3

use elimination -- multiply equation I by -3 to eliminate the y variable

-3(5x + 2y = 22) → -15x - 6y = - 66

-15x - 6y = -66

-2x + 6y = 3

solve

-17x = -63

divide

x = 63/17

plug in x to equation I to find y

-2x + 6y = 3

-2(63/17) + 6y = 3

-126/17 + 6y = 3

add 126/17 to both sides

6y = 177/17

divide by 6

y = (177/17)(1/6)

y = 177/102 → 59/34

(x,y) = (63/17, 59/34)

(x, y) = (3.7, 1.7)
