C. John Locke argued that the people had a contract with with government. Should the government violate this contract and fail to protect the natural rights of the people, the people had the right to exit the contract and form their own government.

Thomas Jefferson was influenced by John Locke’s thinking. Because Jefferson opposed Britian’s taxes on the colonies, Jefferson supported the idea of independence from Britain through the American Revolution.
