Step by step:
(5x - 2) - (3x + 9)
Step one: take away the parenthesis and your equation is now 5x - 2 - 3x + 9
Step two: combine your like terms:
5x - 3x = 2x
-2 + 9 = 7
Answer: 2x + 7
