Timothy has a drawing of the family room of a house that he is building.

The drawing shows the family room to be a rectangle 4 cm wide by 6 cm long.
• The scale is 1 cm = 5 ft.
What is the actual area of the family room?

the area of a rectangle is L × W.

to get the actual area of the rectangular family room, we have to convert the measurements to (ft).

if 1 cm = 5ft...........what about.....

6 cm= ??

cross multiply..... 6 × 5 ÷ 1 = 30ft.

4cm = ??

cross multiply..... 4 × 5 ÷ 1 = 20ft.

area = L × W.

30ft × 20ft = 600ft²
