Sexual reproduction provides genetic diversity because the sperm and egg that are produced contan different combinations of genes than the parent organisms.

In asexual reproduction, only one parent makes offspring. All offspring have the same DNA as the parent. Asexual reproduction is one organism dividing into two organisms without shuffling its genes, so the offspring has the same version of genes as did the parent. With asexual reproduction you get two times as many offspring and two times as many genes into the population.
