Explanation:

The number of roots is equal to the degree of the function

For example

f(x) = x^2 has 2 roots because the highest exponent is 2.

f(x) = x^3 + 2x - 1 has 3 roots , because the function is of degree 3.

(x^2+ 6)^2 = x^4 + 12x^2 + 36 so because of the x^4 it is of degree 4 and has 4 roots.
