Sue's meal cost $35. If she left a tip that was 15% of her bill, how much was the tip? *Plz explain your answer*

To find the percentage of something, we can simply multiply it by its decimal equivalent. 15% means that it is 15/100 of the bill, because percent is out of 100, and 100% of it, is just the original ($35). To convert to a decimal we divide 15 by 100, which gives u: 0.15

It is still 15%, it is just now out of 1.

1 is 100%, which makes sense because 35x1=35

So, to find %15, we can do 35x0.15=5.25

Sue left a tip of $5.25

Alternatively, (but ultimately the same method), you can start by dividing 35 by 100 to get 1%. 35/100=0.35, 0.35 is 1% of 0.35

And then just multiply that 1% by 15 to get 15%

0.35 (the 1%) x 15 = 5.25 (15%)
