scale factor definition speaking is when corresponding sides are proportional to each other (in a dilation). the proportion is a constant ratio which is known as the scale factor. for example, if side AB is 8, and side A’B’ is 4, the scale factor would be ½. if side AB is 3 and side A’B’ is 6, the scale factor is 2
