Q = D + 5 (1)

25×Q + 10×D = 440. (2)

From eq(1) substitute the expression for Q into equation (2)

25×(D+5) + 10D = 440

25D + 125 + 10D = 440

35D = 440 - 125

35D = 315

D = 315/35

D = 9

so,

Dimes = 9 dimes.

and,

Quarters = 9+5

= 14 quarters.

Prove:

25×Q + 10×D = 440

25×14 + 10×9 = 440
