What is the solution to this system of equations using the linear combination method?

5x+y=2
4x+y=5

(im really bad at math so an explanation would be helpful so i can understand better)

Answer:

\huge \boxed{x=-3 \ \mathrm{and} \ y=17}

\rule[225]{225}{2}

Explanation:

Subtracting both equations:

5x + y = 2

- (4x + y = 5)

————————

1x + 0y = -3

x = -3

Substituting x = -3 for the second equation:

4(-3) + y = 5

Solving for y.

-12 + y = 5

y = 17

\rule[225]{225}{2}
