-5 1/4 + (-3)

let's start with the whole numbers:

-5 + (-3) = -8 because it's just like adding positives but add a negative sign

so then we just add the -1/4 and you get -8 1/4

*you have to put the second number in parentheses because its how you properly write the equation Ex: -2+8+(-3)+(-1 5/6)=...

* also note that when you add two negatives it becomes a positive!!!
