Answer:

So to start off, the area of the shape itself is 36 sq2. How do I know this, well the side lengths of the square are both 6.
6 x 6 = 36 sq2

Each of the smaller white (not shaded) squares both have an area of 4 since the side lengths of both are 2. Adding the two smaller squares 8 square units of the larger square are not shaded.
36 sq2 - 8 sq2 = 28 sq2
(area of entire square) - (area of small non-shaded squares) = (Area of the shaded region)

Therefore the area of the shaded region is 28 sq2

Answer:

28 square units

Explanation:

The area of the shaded region is the difference of the area of the large square and the combined area of the two small squares.

large square: 6 units by 6 units

area = 6² = 36

small square: 2 units by 2 units

area = 2² = 4

area of shaded region = 36 - 4 - 4 = 28

Another method is to count the number of little shaded squares.

Answer: 28 square units
