For a parade, attendance was rounded as 10,000 to the nearest hundred. What was the

greatest and least number of people that could have attended the parade? Explain your
answer.

Explanation:

If the number is rounded to the nearest hundred, the smallest number of people that could have attended the parade is 9950 because, rounding up the number 9950 to the nearest hundred would give 10000. If the number 9950 is decreased by 1 (9949), and rounded up to nearest hundred you won't get 10000. Hence the smallest number of people is 9950

While the largest number of people is 10049. 10049 to the nearest hundred is 10000. A further increase to the number 10049 would give a number greater than 10000 when rounded to nearest hundred.
