The sum of three numbers is 110. The third number is 3 times the second. The first number is 5 less than the second. What are the numbers?

Explanation:

Let x, y and z be the 3 numbers we are looking for.

● x + y + z = 110

z is 3 times y (z = 3y)

● x + y + 3y = 110

x is 5 less than y ( x = y -5)

● y-5 + y + 3y = 110

● 5y -5 = 110

Add 5to both sides

● 5y + 5 -5 = 110+5

● 5y = 115

Divide both sides by 5

● 5y/5 = 115/5

● y = 23

we have found that y = 23

● z = 3y

● z = 3×23

● z = 69

● x = y-5

● x = 23-5

● x = 18
