According to Newton, the bodies in the universe attract each other. This force if attraction is called force of gravitation. For example, the earth attracts the moon and the moon attracts the earth too. Similarly, the earth attracts the Jupiter and the Jupiter attracts the Earth.

The effect of force of attraction of a big body on a small body can be observed but that of a small body on a big one cannot be observed. The sun is so large that even the sum of the masses of all its planets and the satellites is only about 0.0015th part of mass of the sun. Due to the gravitational force between the sun and the earth, the earth keeps on moving around the sun. Similarly, the gravitational force between the satellites and planets makes the satellites to revolve around the planets. So, The gravitational force is responsible for the existence of solar system. The effect of gravitation can be experienced more on liquid than solid. Hence, we see tides in the sea and ocean due to the force of gravitation of the moon and the sun on the earth when they lie on the same straight line.
