Answer: Food may be grown at a considerable distance from where it is to be consumed. Break-downs in transportation or orher disruption in tge supply chain may interrupt timely delivery. A population that can grow its own food is less likely to experience interruptions caused by political or economic conditions beyond its control. Any food supply, however, is subject to local conditions caused by weather and climate. It is beneficial to have alternative sources available.
