Ok to start, we want to convert these to improper fractions, for simplicity. To do that, we multiply the denominator by the whole number, then add the number to our product.

That would be
(15 x 6) + 2 = 92
And (10 x 7) + 77

So now our equation looks like this:
y + 92/15 = 77/10

We still need a common denominator, so we have to find their Least Common Multiple, or LCM.

Multiples of 10: 10, 20, 30
Multiples of 15: 15, 30, 45

As we can see, the least common multiple is 30, so now we need to convert both fractions.

77/10 = ??/30

Using basic times table multiplication, we know 10 x 3 = 30, so if we need to multiply the denominator by 3, the same should be done for the numerator.

77/10 x 3/3 = 231/30

And now we do the same here:

92/15 = ??/30

15 x 2 = 30, and since we need to multiply the denominator by 2, same for the numerator.

92/15 x 2/2 = 184/30

So now, our equation looks like this:

y + 184/30 = 231/30

To get y though, we need to convert it to a subtraction equation, making it look like this.

y = 231/30 - 184/30

Now we just subtract 184 from 231, which is 47, meaning y should equal 47/30 or 1 17/30

Answer:

y = 47/30 or 1 17/30

Explanation:

Turn 6 2/15 and 7 7/10 into improper fractions. 6 2/15 into 92/15 and turn 7 7/10 into 77/10

Now find the common denominator....which is 30.

What times 10 equals 30? 3

What times 15 equals 30? 2

Hint: whatever you do to the bottom, you have to do to the top. So you are going to multiply 3 and 77. 92 and 2

Multiply.

77 x 3 = 231

92 x 2 = 184

Subtract.

231 - 184 = 47

Answer: 47/30 or 1 17/30

Hope my explanation makes sense!
