Both Galapagos islands and the Island of Nauru are on the equator, but the Galapagos islands are at 90°W where the Island of Nauru is at 166.50°E. How far is it from the Galapagos islands to Nauru traveling over the Pacific ocean along the equator, correct to the nearest km?

Answer:

11565 km

Explanation:

The computation is shown below:

But before reaching the final solution first we need to do the following calculations

The angle lies between the Galapagos and Nauru is

= 90° + 166.50°

= 256.5°

Since the sum of angle is 360 degrees

So the major arc and the minor arc is

= 360° - 256.5°

= 103.50°

Now the angles lies between galapagos islands is

= 180° - 90°

= 90°

And, between the naura island is

= 180° - 166.50°

= 13.5°

Now the total of this two island is

= 90° + 13.5°

= 103.5°

The length is

= (\pi r )/(180^(\circ)) * \theta\\\\ = (6,400\pi)/(180^(\circ)) * 103.5^(\circ)

= 11565 km
