Indentured servants were pretty common during the colonial period and they had more rights than actual slaves. These indentured servants would sell themselves to individuals who were looking for laborers. In return for their labor work, they would get passage, food, clothes, or a place to live. These people got a bit of land of their own, normally on the property of the person they are working for.
While living the life of an indentured servant was hard, it was not as hard as slavery. Indentured servants worked to pay their debts or in order to maintain food and board, slaves worked for nothing. Slaves got nothing in return and were often housed in much worse conditions and treated harshly.
