A net force of 10.0 N to the right pushes a 3.0 kg book across a table. If the force acts on the book for 5.0 s, what is the book’s final velocity? Assume the book to be initially at rest.

Hi there!

Recall Impulse:

I = \Delta p = F * t

F = force (N)

t = time (s)

Calculate the impulse:

I = 10 · 5 = 50 Ns

This is equivalent to the change in momentum:

I = \Delta p = m\Delta v

Thus:

50 = 3(Δv) = 3(vf - vi)

vi = 0 m/s (starts from rest), so:

50/3 = 3vf

Δv = 16.67 m/s
